What you need
- Cline in your editor
- Node.js 18.17 or newer with
npx - Docker running on the machine
Add the MCP server
In Cline, open MCP Servers → Configure → Configure MCP Servers. Add the socraticode entry under mcpServers in the settings JSON that opens, preserving any existing servers:
{
"mcpServers": {
"socraticode": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "--prefer-online", "socraticode@latest"],
"disabled": false,
"autoApprove": []
}
}
}
Start a new Cline task. Confirm socraticode and its tools appear in the MCP Servers view, then request codebase_status in the task.
Index and verify one project
Ask Cline to run codebase_index for the project. Check codebase_status until indexing completes, then use codebase_search for a known function or feature.
Open one returned source location and confirm it belongs to the expected project. The default watcher handles later file changes while the MCP process is running.
Update the connection
After a SocratiCode release, reconnect the MCP server and start a new task so npx checks the current package.
For sensitive projects, review source-code boundaries before indexing. For authorised review work, continue with security review context.
